Who we are
We started our journey in 2016 when we purchased the farm, simply because we loved the property. My husband and I both grew up with land to roam and explore and we wanted that for our daughter. Shortly after moving in we both knew we needed to do something with the land - to give it purpose!
We started small with chickens, which we loved since day one! There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and seeing them pluck around in the grass and hearing that rooster crow!
We then knew we wanted cows. There is so much lush pasture here, it was a shame to see it go to waste. We started with miniature Zebu. Not knowing too much about cows, experimenting with a smaller breed was an easy and not-so-intimidating route. We had a couple babies born on the farm and we were hooked! While wanting to grow our herd we added a couple Black Angus for beef production.
The Black Angus were wonderful and did provide for our family, however, they were very hard on the land and their temperament could be a little crazy at times. Our friends and family enjoyed our farm grown beef as a tasty and much healthier option than store bought. The demand was seeming to increase and we knew that maybe this is something we would like to do full time and be able to provide to the community!
With a few years now under our belt, we started researching to find the perfect cows for our farm and our family. This is when we came across the Dexter breed. Reading article after article, and scrolling through numerous Facebook groups, Dexter’s seemed too good to be true. Just what we were looking for! A super docile breed, easy to handle, beef producer and easy on the land. Seemed like a dream!
We reached out to another local farmer who also swore by their disposition and production, so we took the leap with Dexter’s! They turned out to be the most wonderful and perfect breed for our family! While on our journey to find new cattle we were introduced to the Idaho Pasture Pig!!
During all the years of farm planning we knew that hands down we would never own pigs! Our friends at Porky Pastures made the IPP breed intriguing so we figured, what could we loose? So we gave it a try! Another breed we just knew was too good to be true! How could their be a pig that is a true grazing pig, doesn’t burrow, doesn’t smell, has the sweetest personality, and easy to handle, and tasty?! Ladies and gentleman… there is a such a pig!!! We have fell in love with our IPPs and they are now one of the focal points of our farm! Who would have thought!!!
Over 8 years later, here we are! One trail after another, learning every step of the way, and still making changes and adjustments. We now have found our passion for the farm; raising pasture and woodland meats that are full of rich nutrients from the land, no anti-biotics, no vaccines and minimally supplemented with grain. There is just something so satisfying working on your own land and knowing what is going into the meat you provide to your family and your community - land rich nutrients and lots of love!!
